Understanding biodynamic gardening: A holistic, ecological and ethical approach to gardening and farming that views the garden or farm as a self-sustaining living organism. The cosmic rhythms are one of the key principles where gardening activities are timed according to lunar and planetary cycles. This calendar uses the Sidereal (Astronomical) Zodiac which takes into account the Precession of Equinoxes and shifts 0° Aries back by cca 1-2 days. Maria Thun (1922-2012), an authority on biodynamics, used this Sidereal zodiac.

Biodynamic spraying days are also noted on the calendar - Moon opposition Saturn - further increasing soil activity.

As the moon’s gravitational pull causes tides to rise and fall, it also affects moisture in the soil. Therefore it is said that seeds will absorb more water during the full moon and the new moon, when more moisture is pulled to the surface. This causes seeds to swell, resulting in improved germination and better-established plants. The moon also impacts plant growth through geotropism, which is how plants grow in response to gravity. Roots grow downward in the direction of the gravitational pull and stems grow in the opposite direction.
