Climate zones are the general weather conditions averaged over a series of years in a particular place. These include the average temperature, air pressure, humidity, rainfall, sunshine, cloud and wind directions throughout the year.

A microclimate is a smaller area within a climate zone that has its own unique climate. This can be caused by the slope or aspect of an area, living near water, living in a heavy urban area, the use of a greenhouse, climate change or in an El Niño climate pattern.

MEDITERRANEAN: Hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Examples: coastal California, southern France, Cape Town area (South Africa)

SEMI-ARID STEPPE: Low, erratic rainfall with hot summers and cool-to-cold winters with grassland or scrub vegetation. Examples: the Klein Karoo (South Africa), Mongolian steppe, Great Plains (USA)

SEMI-ARID DESERT: Very low rainfall, extreme heat or cold winters with sparse vegetation. Examples: the Groot Karoo (South Africa), Sahara fringe, Namib Desert, Sonoran Desert, Atacama Desert margins

TEMPERATE HIGHLAND: Cooler year-round temperatures due to elevation with summer rainfall and thunderstorms, and frost in winter. Examples: Ethiopian Highlands, Bogotá (Colombia), Nairobi (Kenya), Johannesburg (South Africa)

HUMID SUBTROPICAL: Hot, humid summers and mild winters, with rainfall year-round but concentrated in summer.

Examples: southeastern USA, Buenos Aires (Argentina), Nelspruit (South Africa)

TEMPERATE OCEANIC: Mild summers, cool winters and consistent rainfall year-round due to maritime influence.

Examples: Knysna (South Africa), United Kingdom, Pacific Northwest (USA), coastal Chile

COASTAL HUMID SUBTROPICAL: Rain year-round with hot summers and mild winters. Consistent humidity due to maritime influence. Examples: Durban (South Africa), Sydney (Australia), Brisbane, parts of the Gulf Coast (USA)

As the moon’s gravitational pull causes tides to rise and fall, it also affects moisture in the soil. Therefore it is said that seeds will absorb more water during the full moon and the new moon, when more moisture is pulled to the surface. This causes seeds to swell, resulting in improved germination and better-established plants.

The moon also impacts plant growth through geotropism, which is how plants grow in response to gravity. Roots grow downward in the direction of the gravitational pull and stems grow in the opposite direction.

The moon phases (new moon, full moon, first, last quarter) happen at the same moment in time worldwide - when it's a full moon in South Africa, it's also a full moon in New York or London at that same instant (just displayed in each place's local clock time due to time zones).
