A very old variety of spinach, also known as sea spinach, it is similar to the wild spinach growing on our ocean dunes. Very hardy, heat loving, ground covering spinach. Its succulent leaves are highly nutritious. This offers a good food source in times of drought or winter rainfall areas for summer spinach. This spinach will grow as a perennial spinach in frost free areas and easily reseed itself. Its stories go back to the 18th century, and to saving Captain Cook’s scurvy-ridden crew as they found it growing throughout the islands of the South Seas. The sailors on the ship the Endeavor prized this plant because they desperately needed Vitamin C. It also has high amounts of antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin C and iron. They ate great amounts of it, took more on board and back to the old world where it became a popular warm-season green for gardeners.
